Basic Rules Of The Game
As with many other card games the tens and face cards of a pack count as ten,
whereas the Ace can count as either a one or eleven. The remaining cards in a
pack are valued according to their face value. In Black jack all players play
against the dealer of the game, rather than against each other. This means that
regardless of what other people at the table may be holding, the only hands
that will influence your winnings are those cards held by yourself in
comparison to the hand played by the dealer. The second card of the dealer’s
hand is traditionally played face up so that you can glean some idea of what
type of hand the dealer might have. For example if the dealer turns over a two
of clubs then that hand may possibly be a twelve, or it could be the forerunner
of a five card trick. If the dealer’s upturned card is an Ace then dependent on
your own hand it would pay to bet cautiously as a “Blackjack” (an Ace and any
card with the value of ten) then that hand beats all in a game. Remember that
it is not that important to get a score of 21, but rather that your hand is
closer to twenty-one than the dealer.
Four Helpful Rules For a Winning Blackjack Strategy
-
If the dealer’s card is higher than seven, then make sure your hand is either
17 or higher, or what is known as a “soft count” of 18 or higher. A “soft
count” is a hand where a held Ace is counted as eleven not one.
-
If the dealer’s card is lower than a six, then make sure your hand equals a
twelve or higher.
-
If the dealer’s card is a nine or below that, then “double down” when your
first two cards equal ten or eleven. “Double down” is a special bet that allows
you to double the bet you have after receiving your first two cards, but this
will mean that you will only get one further card.
-
In Black jack it is possible to split your hand if the first two cards are a
pair. However, most Blackjack books suggest that you should only split pairs if
you are dealt a pair of Aces, or a pair of eights, and that all other pairs
should be played as a normal hand. Splitting the Aces allow you two chances of
scoring a Blackjack and splitting a pair of eights gives you more of a chance
to score eighteen, which is a safe hand and reasonably close to the desired
twenty-one.
