The main reason for the popularity of Video Poker is that it combines aspects of both luck and skill. There is no chance of a hidden house advantage and every draw begins with a fresh deck of shuffled cards. Some Video Poker machines also have a positive financial expectation if the player has played perfectly for long enough.

The difference between Video Poker and a live game of poker lies in the fact that you do not aim to beat a fellow player in the game. Instead, you win by holding one of the many winning combinations available.

Modus Operandi of Video Poker

Most of the Video Poker machines are the size of a slot machine and is available in a desktop or tabletop configuration. They come in various denominations from nickels to five dollars machines. One should remember not to play video poker with less than the maximum amount of coins. Once the bet is placed, five cards are dealt to the player. The required cards are kept by pressing the appropriate HOLD button or by touching the cards directly on the touch screen. The “held” cards will remain while new cards will replace the vacancies. This new set represents the final hand.

The most popular form of Video Poker machine is the jacks or better. Here the player wins if their final five-card hand contains at least a pair of jacks or better. This was the original form of video poker; now there are newer versions that include Deuces Wild, Double Bonus Poker, Joker’s Wild, Poker Frenzy, among others.

Winning Video Poker Hands

There are many winning combinations for video poker. The royal flush is the hand wherein A, K, Q, J and 10 all belong to the same suit. In a straight flush, there should be five cards in sequence, all of the same suit. The four of a kind hand is one wherein there are four cards of the same rank, like all four K’s of the four suits. A full house is a hand wherein there are three of the same ranks, and a pair- K, K, K and a pair of aces.

A flush sequence occurs when there are any five cards of the same suit. A straight sequence is one wherein there are five cards in a sequence, not necessarily of the same suit. Here the ace can be high or low. In three of a kind, there will be three cards of the same rank, with the remaining two cards being any two cards. The two pair sequence is one where there are two cards of one rank, with two cards of another rank, like K, K and 8, 8, with any fifth card. For a jacks or better hand, there has to be a pair of jacks, queens, kings or aces in the final hand. The remaining three cards can be any three cards.

One should remember that a change in payout tables alters the player’s Video Poker strategy. One using the Jacks or better strategy on a Deuces Wild machine can expect misplayed hands with fewer wins.

For a winning poker hand, the credit one gets depends on the bet for that poker game. The more you bet on a poker hand, the more you win for a good poker hand.
