The Evils of a Parlay Bet
| |
The parlay bet. It is the work of the devil. Oh sure, it
promises a higher pay off if you predict 2 games, but there lies the subtle
trap that so many people fall into; you have to pick 2 games!
While that higher payoff is enticing, the parlay bet makes little sense. In a
parlay bet, you have 3 chances to lose, and only one chance to win.

Still hasn't sunk in yet? Here's an example.
The Mongooses are playing the Cobras at early this afternoon. And the Mongooses
are getting points! How can this be? The Mongooses have a great defense, and
their offense has really been clicking. You circle the game, because you have a
good feeling.
But wait, later that night the Slugs are playing the Saltshakers, and they're
getting points too! Sure, the Slugs are a little slow, but they've been around
the block and they never seem to give up. You circle that game too.
And then you think to yourself, hey, why not parlay, and increase the payout?
Sounds simple enough.
Sure, except that for you to win, the Mongooses AND the Slugs have to cover. If
neither do, you lose. If the Mongooses win, but the Slugs lose, you lose. If
the Mongooses lose but the Slugs win, you lose.
Three against one. Those are not odds that favor you.
I never understood the appeal of the parlay. Yes, you get better odds, but
they're not fantastic. Whenever I like two games, I bet the first one, and then
make the second bet, maybe increase it a bit with my earlier winnings.
That way, at least I even the playing field a bit more for myself to win the
bet, instead of stacking the deck for the sportsbook.
