The increase in the gambling habit today is sometimes called as
"binge-gambling", where people who previously did not have access to casinos
and gambling, have easy access to it with the abundant casinos and sites
available on the web. The boost from wireless technology in gambling lies
mostly in the arenas of sports book revenues and lottery businesses, than in
video poker and virtual blackjack games.
In places like Sweden, some online casino developers have launched a wireless
casino game for WAP (wireless application protocol) enabled phones. And in the
good ol' United States, a family based business has tested a way of playing
blackjack, and thus draw poker for cash winnings, from a cell phone.
A mobile gaming company is now even developing a portable, wireless miniature
slot machine which is the size of a laptop computer which allows gamblers to
roam throughout a casino and gamble, while at the poolside! This company is
also working on a fingerprint-scanning element which will ensure that the
person using the machine is old enough to gamble.
Women Gamble More Now
It may be interesting to note that online gambling in the US has grown 566%
since 2003, mainly because of the big increase in the number of women betting
online. In the early 90s, women represented only 4% of the gamblers. Now, with
the easy accessibility and convenience of mobile phone betting, about 20% of
British women visit an online casino or site at least once a year. So women are
also getting their fair share in the gambling binge!
