Going On Tilt
| |
What do you call a maniac, muck and a crack? Sounds like the beginning of a bad
joke. But all three have the same thing in common. They are poker terms.
Poker Terms
Maniac is somewhat obvious. The term defines a gambler who does quite a bit of
aggressive raising, betting and bluffing. A true maniac may not be very
successful at gaming, but a player who can pretend to act like a maniac can be
an extremely dangerous opponent. Muck is the term used to describe the pile of
used cards in front of the dealer. And crack is the term that refers to a
beaten hand.
Poker Slang History
Most people know poker slang from the old westerns. But poker has a dialect all
of its own. Poker made its American debut on the Mississippi, and thanks to the
California gold rush, started to make it way across the interior with the help
of wagons and trains. By the 1850’s, poker had begun to take its modern day
shape. This can explain some of the metaphors used to describe poker hands.
Poker Lingo Can Help
Heading out to the poker table not knowing some of the lingo can make you feel
a little lost. While most people know what “ante” means, “blinds” is also a
term that refers to the initial money being placed in the pot. Since 2003, the
World Poker Tour has reached the television audience and is considered a
popular sporting event that draws men and women of all ages into the game. With
so many new televised poker games, people are searching for the meaning of
poker terms. As you scroll through the poker glossary, you can’t help but
smile. After all, whether you play on tilt or like a maniac, and you manage to
have the nuts, just don’t forget to give the dealer a toke.
