Sports betting, but not Internet gambling, OK with N.J. voters
New Jersey residents favor legalizing sports betting but oppose allowing Internet gambling, such as online poker, according to a poll released Monday by Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Public Mind.
The survey of 801 registered voters statewide this month found that 62 percent support and 32 percent oppose the idea of allowing New Jerseyans to make bets on sports, such as football and basketball, at Atlantic City casinos and state racetracks. A majority of those polled also favor expanding the right to bet on sports to all 50 states. Such betting currently is permitted only in Nevada, Delaware, Oregon and Montana — and the latter three states have severe limitations on the type of bets allowed.
State Sen. Ray Lesniak, D-Union, successfully lobbied the Senate and Assembly two months ago to approve a state referendum for November on whether New Jersey should offer sports betting. Governor Christie has opposed the idea, in large part because federal law currently precludes expansion of sports betting beyond the four states that have that right.
