Poland Tackles Gambling's Sponsorship of Football
Football has gone all-in on online gambling. Global stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Ronaldinho now wear shirts with the names of betting companies across their chests in place of the traditional manufacturers that used to dominate the sponsorship market.
Amid tough economic conditions, the steady growth of the gambling sector has been credited with sustaining sponsorship revenue and driving spending in the sport. But government proposals in Poland to restrict online gambling in the country could force football clubs in that country to terminate lucrative sponsorship deals with those companies. Draft legislation is due for discussion this week and comes after President Lech Kaczynski signed a bill Friday banning slot machines and limiting gambling to brick-and-mortar casinos.
Gambling-related marketing and advertising has also been outlawed under the new legislation, and though sponsorship deals between sports teams and e-gaming companies have escaped the current ban, these agreements would be forbidden under the latest raft of proposals.
