LAS VEGAS -- A man who robbed the Rio casino on Thursday morning arrived and fled the crime scene in two different vehicles, using friends as accomplices in an effort to pay off a gambling debt, according to Las Vegas Metro police. Authorities on Friday identified the suspect as 42-year-old Steven Gao, described in an arrest report as a Lucky Cab employee who used a cheap disguise and unloaded gun to steal more than $33,000 from a Pai Gow table. The arrest report includes testimony from two people charged in the case: Gao’s co-worker -- 62-year-old Hiroyuki Yamaguchi -- and an acquaintance who said Gao owed him $15,000.
That person, Edward Land, said he drove Gao to the Rio hotel Thursday and was told to wait for him at the nearby Palms resort, according to the arrest report. Police said Gao, disguised in a fedora, fake mustache and sunglasses, walked up to a Pai Gow table and started putting chips into a laptop bag slung over his shoulder. When a dealer tried to stop him, police said Gao pointed a silver revolver at the dealer and started making threats.
Authorities estimated Gao stole $21,000 in yellow $1,000 chips, $4,000 in purple $500 chips, $7,400 in black $100 chips and $800 in green $25 chips from the casino and customers at the table. The robber escaped in a taxi parked outside one of the resort’s entrances. Police later traced the cab to the Terrible’s casino and learned Yamaguchi was the driver. Detectives searched the cab and said they found the unloaded revolver in a plastic bag under the front passenger seat of the cab. Video from the cab’s camera wasn’t available, police said, because Yamaguchi had placed black tape over the lens of the interior camera shortly before the robbery. But on an audio recording, detectives said, they heard a man believed to be Gao saying he was upset that he dropped a $10,000 chip while leaving the Rio.
Yamaguchi later admitted -- according to the arrest report -- that Gao asked to be picked up at the Rio at around 4:30 a.m. Thursday. Yamaguchi told police he was given a roll of black tape and asked to cover the camera. Police said Gao gave some chips to Yamaguchi before he was dropped off at Terrible’s and met up with Land. Later that day, after he two retreated back to a home on Retriever Avenue, near Cimarron Road and Twain Avenue, police said, Land asked Gao about the robbery. “Land originally stated Gao told him, ‘I robbed a casino, please help me so you
