CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Sweepstakes cafes. They're popping up all Charlotte. There are nearly 1,000 in North Carolina right now.
But state lawmakers just made it clear they believe those sweepstakes machines are just the same as video poker, which is illegal.
The NC House by a vote of 86-to-27 passed a Senate bill which extends the legislature's 2006 video poker ban to computer-based sweepstakes games.
The bill now goes to Gov. Perdue's for her signature. If, as expected, she approves it, it will become law December 1st.
Supporters of the sweepstakes machine ban say it adversely affects poorer residents, who make up a large percentage of those who use them.
But those in the industry say the state is being hypocritical.
"It's not about what's right and what's wrong," said Natalie Dove, manager at Top Dawg Sweepstakes on Wilkinson Boulevard in West Charlotte. "I mean, when it comes down to it, it really is gambling -- but isn't the lottery gambling too?"
The North Carolina Education Lottery is legal -- and unlike the sweepstakes businesses, the profits from the lottery go to the state. http://www.wbtv.com/Global/story.asp?S=12770460 By Jeff Atkinson
