UConn Men Advance To Sweet 16
Men Knock Out Cincinnati 69-58
STORRS, Conn. -- The University of Connecticut men's basketball team has secured a spot in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament after a win over the Cincinnati Bearcats on Saturday night.
It was the first time in NCAA history that two teams from the same conference met this early in the tournament.
The Huskies went into halftime with the lead but Cincinnati was not done and fought back in the second half, erasing that lead.
Junior Kemba Walker scored 33 points in the physical game. Kemba was even sporting a wrapped-up wrist in the second half, but didn't let that stop him. The men put up a strong run late in the game and were able to pull away with the 69-58 win over the sixth-ranked Bearcats.
The men will next play second-ranked San Diego State Thursday night in Anaheim.

Huskies move on by dismissing Bearcats
WASHINGTON — Another Saturday night, another Big East opponent, and for the University of Connecticut Huskies, another victory.
But unlike the dramatics of a week ago when Jim Calhoun’s team beat Louisville in New York for the Big East tournament title with a show of fast-paced basketball, last night’s victory over Cincinnati was more of a grind.
In a game that lacked the sizzle of their last few encounters with conference opponents, the Huskies earned a 69-58 victory in a West Regional third-round game at the Verizon Center.
The victory sends the Huskies (28-9) into the regional semifinals Thursday night in Anaheim, Calif., against No. 2 seed San Diego State, which survived Temple yesterday in double overtime.
For the third-seeded Huskies, who won the Big East tournament with a five-games-in-five-days marathon, it was a familiar scriptss as guard Kemba Walker led the attack with a game-high 33 points.
But unlike the nearly flawless effort the Huskies put forth in rolling over Bucknell Thursday night, and unlike the often spectacular run in New York, this victory required more blue-collar work.

NCAA women's tournament: Stanford out to show its game is not soft
Two years ago, Connecticut coach Geno Auriemma gamely tried to dispel the notion of the Stanford "nice girls" by praising the Cardinal's toughness.
Then his Huskies burnished the perception into the national consciousness by physically intimidating Stanford en route to an NCAA title at the Final Four in St. Louis.
Now, Cardinal coach Tara VanDerveer has resurrected the image as her second-ranked team opens the NCAA tournament Saturday at Maples Pavilion against UC Davis. As Stanford embarks on a journey to win its first NCAA crown since 1992, VanDerveer said the Cardinal needs more aggression to realize its goal.
"You can't be the nice girls from Stanford and expect to be really successful at the highest level," she said. "You've got to get down and get dirty."
It starts, players said Friday, against the 16th-seeded Aggies (24-8) in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday. Eighth-seeded Texas Tech plays No. 9 St. John's at 1 p.m. The winners will play Monday at Maples for a chance to advance to the Sweet 16 in Spokane, Wash.
VanDerveer, who surpassed her 800th career victory this season, is a world-class motivator. Perhaps she has gleaned on to something to help propel the top-seeded Cardinal to its fourth consecutive trip to the Final Four. In the previous three trips, Stanford has been defeated by physically superior teams from Tennessee and UConn.

UConn wins National Championship
UConn and Butler combined for just 41 points in the first half of Monday's national title game. The Huskies caught 'fire' in the second half to defeat Butler 53-41 to give UConn its third national title.

Notre Dame Upsets UConn 72-63, Heads To Title Game
INDIANAPOLIS -- First Tennessee, now Connecticut - Skylar Diggins and Notre Dame are running over the women's basketball elite.
Now the Irish stand one victory away from their first national championship in 10 years.
Diggins scored 28 points and Notre Dame upset UConn 72-63 on Sunday night, ending Maya Moore's brilliant career and the Huskies' bid for a third straight national championship.
Ten years after their last title, the Irish will be playing for another one Tuesday night against Texas A&M, a 63-62 winner over Stanford in the first semifinal. The Aggies scored with 3 seconds left in a back-and-forth game to set up only the second championship without a top seed.
"I'm pretty sure nobody in America had Notre Dame playing Texas A&M in the final," Irish coach Muffet McGraw said. "I think we definitely earned it. I think we worked hard to get here."
Connecticut and Stanford had each been to the Final Four the last four seasons and were expected to meet for the title in a rematch of last year's title game. While UConn won that meeting, the Cardinal ended UConn's record 90-game winning streak on Dec. 30.
Everyone thought the rematch would come in Indianapolis.
Notre Dame was 0-3 against its Big East rival this season, but the Irish had all the answers this time for the Huskies, who lost for just the second time in three seasons.
Earlier this tournament, the Irish beat Tennessee to end a 20-game skid against the Volunteers.
Now the Irish (31-7) have knocked out the two-time defending champions.
Moore finished with 36 points. She scored 16 in a row in the second half, the last 14 as she tried to rally the Huskies from a 12-point deficit in the final 6 minutes, but it wasn't enough for UConn (36-2).

Kentucky falls to UConn in Final Four, 56-55
HOUSTON – In the locker room before his team prepared to play Connecticut Saturday night in the Final Four, University of Kentucky coach John Calipari laid out his game plan.
He told the Wildcats their team defense would hold Connecticut to 56 points. That, he told them, would be enough to win.
Calipari was half right.The Huskies clipped the Wildcats 56-55 Saturday at Reliant Stadium in front of a Final Four record crowd of 75,421 fans, closing the curtain on UK's surprising season.
"We got them to the number that coach exactly wanted us to, 56," forward Terrence Jones said. "It's just hard to win shooting 33 percent."
On a night when it held UConn star Kemba Walker to a hard-fought 18 points, one of UK's best-ever three-point shooting teams couldn't find the range. The Wildcats were 21-for-62 from the floor, 9-for-27 from long distance.
The Cats shot 4-for-12 from the free-throw line.
Brandon Knight scored 17 points to lead UK, but he was 6-for-23 from the floor. Jones had 11 points and 15 rebounds.
"I've been doing this a long time," Calipari said. "If you come in and miss free throws, a bunch of threes, it's hard to advance. Just hard."

UConn Women Defeat Duke
UConn Advances To 4th Straight Final Four
PHILADELPHIA, Penn. -- The University of Connecticut women's basketball team defeated Duke University Tuesday night.
Maya Moore scored 28 points, including the 3,000th of her career, to lead top-seed Connecticut to its 75-40 win over Duke on Tuesday night and another trip to the Final Four.
UConn is now two victories away from winning its third straight national championship that would match the school's own run from 2002-04 and Tennessee's from 1996-98.
Next up is Notre Dame on Sunday in the national semifinals. The two Big East teams are plenty familiar with each other, having played three times this season already. UConn won all of those matchups including a 73-64 victory in the Big East tournament championship game.
Once again rural Storrs, Conn., is the center of the college basketball world as both the men's and women's teams are in the Final Four. It's the third time in the past seven years that both programs have advanced this far with 2004 culminating in dual titles.

UConn Women Defeat Georgetown 68-63
Move On To Elite 8
PHILADELPHIA, Penn. -- Maya Moore had 23 points and 14 rebounds to help Connecticut rally from a seven-point second half deficit and beat Georgetown 68-63 on Sunday in the regional semifinals.
Bria Hartley added 17 points for UConn (35-1), which is now three victories away from a third straight national championship that would match the school's own run from 2002-04 and Tennessee's from 1996-98.
This was the third meeting between the two Big East teams in the past 30 days. UConn won the first two games by double digits, but Georgetown was able to remain close in those games by forcing the Huskies into a combined 47 turnovers with its relentless pressure.
The Hoyas showed no fear of the top seed from the start, giving the Huskies all they could handle.
Monica McNutt scored 17 points for Georgetown.
UConn will face the winner of the DePaul/Duke game on Tuesday.

Final Four Bound: Huskies Edge Wildcats, 65-63
Kemba Walker scores 20 points and Jeremy Lamb adds 19 as they lead UConn past Arizona into the Final Four.
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Jim Calhoun could scarcely watch when the most improbable postseason run of his coaching life at Connecticut came down to an open 3-point attempt by Arizona's Jamelle Horne.
The shot clanged off the back rim. The clock hit zeros.
Nine victories in just 19 days. Calhoun has seen just about everything, but nothing like this - and now his Huskies will keep running all the way to Houston.
Kemba Walker scored 20 points, freshman Jeremy Lamb added 19 and UConn earned its second Final Four berth in three years, beating Arizona 65-63 Saturday to win the West regional.
After missing the NCAA tournament entirely last year, Calhoun's tireless team is headed to the Huskies' fourth Final Four, punctuated by an ebullient on-court celebration in a building packed with Arizona fans.

UConn Women Beat Hartford 75-39
Women Advance To Second Round Tuesday
STORRS, Conn. -- The University of Connecticut women's basketball team has secured a seat in the second round of tournament play after Sundays win over the University of Hartford.
The in-state match up between the first-seed Huskies and the sixteenth-seeded Hawks was not close for long.
The UConn women took a 40-17 lead to the locker room at the half and never looked back.
In the end the Hawks could not answer and would fall to UConn 75-39.
UConn will play the winner of the Kansas State/Purdue game on Tuesday.
