Ex-Tuskegee mayor calls on citizens to march for bingo
As former Tuskegee mayor and former state representative for District 82, and as the original sponsor of the bingo bill, I would like to say to the citizens of Macon County and to all of the employees at VictoryLand that the fight for jobs and justice will continue. We are more determined now than ever.
Unfortunately, it was necessary for VictoryLand to strategically and temporarily close in order to prevent an unlawful raid by Gov. Bob Riley's task force. It was in the best interest of safety for employees and for customers.
Our bill is legal. No court has ever ruled that House Bill 660, which led to the constitutional amendment allowing bingo to be played in Macon County, is illegal.
Also, it is important to note that my original bill called for a constitutional amendment authorizing bingo to be played in any form in Macon County. That means the bill allows bingo to be played in any of the following ways: electronic bingo machines, computers or bingo cards. (VictoryLand has used computers in the past.) In other words, bingo can still be played in Macon County, whether on electronic bingo machines or not.
I suggest VictoryLand immediately consider playing bingo either by computers or on cards, or both, until this matter is settled either in the courts or by the people's vote.
We also want to make it very clear we will not be satisfied until VictoryLand has re-activated its alcoholic beverage license. Here again, I sponsored legislation that allowed the people to make a decision on seven-day alcoholic beverage sales in Macon County. For the customers at VictoryLand not to have the option of purchasing alcoholic beverages means many jobs and alcohol tax dollars are lost.
In the meantime, we ask all citizens to join together in a "March on the State Capitol" on Saturday at 3 p.m. to demand jobs, justice and the right to vote on bingo. We must let our legislators and our governor know we have just begun to fight.

I like bingo and its always fun to play that. It sometimes gets so boring yet the possibility of winning is bigger. love it! |
