First Responders Raise Money For Crash Victim's Families
4 Killed, 1 Injured In Tuesday Crash
GRISWOLD, Conn. -- The same firefighters and first responders to Tuesday's deadly crash in Griswold that killed four teenagers and injured a fifth are answering a new call today. They're raising money to help those families who are preparing to bury their loved ones.
In the first three hours of the effort to benefit the families, a steady stream of traffic filled the boots of the firefighters. So far, more than $10,000 has been raised.
The fundraiser comes on the same day that two of the victim's wakes were scheduled.
Dollar bills, checks and change have been dropped into the boots from all over the state all morning.
"It was a horrible night," said Dick Howser, of Griswold. "But, the town will pull together here as we always do."
"People were waiting for us," said Deputy Fire Chief Jennifer Blake. "By the time we got to the road, we had a few hundred dollars already."
While friends and family prepare to say goodbye, mourners exchanged hugs and tears on Wednesday during a candlelight vigil for the five victims.
