Years ago, the idea of blackjack card counting was virtually unheard of. The first system of counting cards developed in the 1950’s, but it became well-known when Dr. Edward O. Thorp, a mathematics professor penned the book titled Beat the Dealer. His book shed light on the fact that it was possible for an intelligent, practiced player and card counter could actually have the advantage over a blackjack dealer by using a blackjack card counting system to keep track of the balance between high and low cards in a deck.

Blackjack Card Counting - How do they do it?

So, how can a player counting cards keep track of all of the cards in blackjack? The strategies are numerous, but it all boils down to one thing. Blackjack card counting centers around adding or subtracting the number 1. When a high card hits the table, a player subtracts one, and when a low card is dealt, a player adds 1. The bigger the count, the more high cards, and the more high cards are in the deck, the greater edge exists for the player.

Swaying The Odds

A misconception about blackjack card counting is that card counters have is that card counters memorize all the cards in the shoe. That is a feat that would be impossible for almost anyone. Card counters don’t know what the next card will be every time, but rather have a general idea of some of the cards that will be coming up. This information helps them sway the odds in their favor.
